Aware that the existing golf course lacked the quality of its parkland and links rival in Co. Clare, the management decided to embark on a major refurbishment, at a cost of 5 million euro.
American designer Ron Kirby, who worked on the Nicklaus team at Mount Juliet golf course and was responsible for completing the Old Head of Kinsale, has made far more strategic use of the lake which dominates the site. He has also built an outstanding finish, comprising of a par-five 18th where the drive is played over a swamp before the hole dog-legs right.
