Portsalon Golf CourseLocation:- County Donegal, 20 miles / 32 km north of Letterkenny 5913 yards par 69 Many people believe that the beach that adjoins Portsalon, is an inescapable part of the golf course's magical appeal, as it is among the very best in the world. Portsalon Golf Course itself, is one of the best in the world. It is one of the oldest in the country, and it has a good deal going for it. Its greens have recently been remodelled, without altering its essential character, and the links should be even better when some upgrading has been completed, designed to make it safer and longer. Portsalon Golf Club is located on the northwest shore of Lough Swilly and overlooks the magnificent Ballymastocker Bay. Portsalon holds many attractions for the visiting golfer. There are two terrific par 4s on the homeward run: the 13th, known as the Matterthorn, has a view off the tee box that gives the hole its name, then it will find the gully on the right. The 15th, a par 4 that swings inland, demands a very good drive followed by an approach that must carry a dyke to find the green. While these two holes on the homeward stretch capture the essence of true links golf, the golf course has been considerably toughened up by the transformation of 11 holes by the golf architect Pat Ruddy. The ambience of Portsalon has been retained, however and the island tee at the 6th hole offers a clear example for the unique character that can be found on this often wind blown links terrain. Facilities offered are changing rooms with showers, full catering facilities, bar, practice area, buggy hire and trolley hire.
