Royal Portrush Golf CourseLocation:- Co Antrim. Northern Ireland. The Dunluce Links Course. par 73, 6818 yards. The Valley Links Course, par 70, 6273 yards. Royal Portrush Golf Club was formed in May 1888. It was known then as the County Club. It became the Royal County Club in 1892, when H.R.H The Duke of York was its patron. Finally the name was changed to "The Royal Portrush Golf Club" in 1895 with H.R.H The Prince of Wales as patron. Royal Portrush was the venue for the first professional tournament in Ireland in 1895 and in the same year the first Ladies Championships were held. Fred Daly, the only Irishman ever to win "The Open" was a Royal Portrush member. July 1951 saw the first open championship ever held in Ireland. Played at Royal Portrush on the course, redesigned by Mr. H.S. Colt. In 1947. Today with two excellent practice grounds the novice can receive basic lessons or the experienced golfer can brush up on the finer aspects of there play, under the guidance of the resident professional. Royal Portrush Golf Club (established 1888) being a private Club, has only limited availability for visitors on the Dunluce and Valley Links and would appreciate that the following conditions of play are observed. The Rules of Golf, as laid down by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews shall govern play on the Links, and the strict observance of the Etiquette of Golf is essential. Many top golfers have portrayed Royal Portrush Golf Club as one of the most challenging golf courses in the world. It is a testing course yes, requiring skill and concentration, but set in one of the most scenic parts of Europe. Fifth Hole. ( White Rocks ). 384 yards par 4. Having surveyed the grand view from this tee, of the white rocks and the Giants Causeway beyond, the problem of how to reach the green can bring you down to earth with a bump. However good the drive, the approach to the green is fraught with traps. To the right we have a deep hollow whilst the back of the green overlooks the white rocks below. It is safer to follow the dog leg approach. Tenth Hole. ( Dhu Varren ), 478 yards par 5. This is a testing par 5 in normal conditions. The green itself is elevated, with undulating mounds short of it, and further on, the green falls away sharply to the right. A long straight second is the only way to find the green. Fourteenth Hole. ( Calamity Corner ), 210 yards par 3. The name says it all. A hole for strength and courage. The direct line to the pin calls for a shot from the tee that can be a full drive to a mid iron, depending on the wind. However when you play it, you will most certainly remember it. Seventeenth Hole. ( Glenarm ), 548 yards par 5. From the tee you are faced with a deep bunker cut out of the hill, which easily catches the sliced drive. The fairway narrows closer to the green and your second shot, invariably a wooden club, must be accurate to avoid bunkers to the right and left, cut into the fairway. Royal Portrush Golf Club is situated just one hours drive from Belfast International Airport and a similar time from the ferry port of Larne. The coastal drive from Larne is quite spectacular with the road carved out of the cliffs. The famous Giants Causeway, beautiful white sandy beaches and rolling green countryside surround Royal Portrush Golf Club. Excellent guesthouse and hotel accommodation are available with first class restaurants and a wide range of family entertainment close by.
