Tralee Golf CourseLocation:- Co Kerry Ireland 6890 Yards Par 71 When Arnold Palmer first saw the area upon which his company was to build Tralee golf links, he was ecstatic about the possibilities. "I have never come across a piece of land so ideally suited for the building of a golf course," he said. "I designed the first nine, but surely God designed the back nine," Palmer explained afterwards. "I am happy that we have one of the worlds' great links here." "The setting is quite the most magnificent backdrop for a golf course I have ever encountered," wrote Peter Dobereiner, the famous golf writer, not long after the course was opened in October 1984. It is Tralee Golf Club's fourth permanent course since the club was first established in 1896. Each of the club's three courses in the town of Tralee were plagued by the high average rainfall. They were almost unplayable during the winter, so it was decided to ask Arnold Palmer to design a course in Barrow in 1980 The main consideration was that the area provided the sandy, links texture that would allow for golf all year round. The scenery and the history surrounding the course were an added bonus At Tralee Golf Club the beach running alongside the second hole was used in filming scenes in the Oscar-winning movie, Ryan's Daughter in 1968, while the beach across the narrow neck of water beside the 15th tee is where Roger Casement landed from a German submarine on Good Friday, 1916. He was arrested and subsequently hanged a few months later. The tower at the back of the 3rd green was probably built during the 13th century, while the ruins of the castle across the water on Fenit Island date back to the 12th century. These served to protect Barrow Harbour, from where Brendan the Navigator is reputed to have set out on his travels to America almost a thousand years before Christopher Columbus At Tralee Golf Club, Golfers, Groups or Societies must play off the markers designated on the day by the Management of Tralee Golf Club and must abide by whatever local rules are stipulated by the Club on the day and observe signs and directions on the course Caddies are available on an ad hoc basis; they are not employed by the Club and provide a service on a freelance basis Catering is available in the Tralee Golf Clubhouse Golfers should arrive in good time and are advised to allow at least 30 minutes by car from Tralee town centre to the course.
